Camp Navarro, Calarian, Zamboanga City – September 8, 2022

A member of the Abu Sayyaf Group surrendered to the troops of the Joint Task Force Basilan on September 7, 2022.

A.k.a. Muadz, 23 years old, a resident of Barangay Silangkum, Tipo-Tipo, Basilan Province, and a member of the ASG under the late Furuji Indama surrendered to the Bravo Company of the 18th Infantry Battalion. He was then formally presented to the Battalion Commander, Lt. Col. Cyril Santander; Tipo-Tipo Vice-Mayor Ingatun Istarul; and other local officials on the same day.

During the presentation held at the Tipo-Tipo Municipal Hall located in Barangay Tipo-Tipo Proper, same municipality, a.k.a. Muadz handed over his M1 Garand rifle.

Lt. Col. Santander said that the surrender of a.k.a. Muadz was successfully facilitated by the Bravo Company of the 18IB in collaboration with the local government of Tipo-Tipo headed by Mayor Arcam Istarul, Silangkum Barangay Chairman Harigz Mande, and PNP Tipo-Tipo.

The former violent extremist underwent custodial debriefing conducted by the 18IB. A.k.a. Muadz said that after the death of Furuji Indama, his life became more miserable and full of fear thinking that one day he will also be neutralized. The 23-year-old combatant then decided to peacefully end his armed struggle and start a new life as a law-abiding and productive member of the society.

Lt. Gen. Alfredo Rosario, Jr., Commander of Western Mindanao Command expressed his admiration to the decision of the surrendered personality and encourages those who are still hesitant to come out to think about their families and future. "The government and the armed forces are more than willing to welcome those who wish to lay down their arms, join the mainstream society, and live a peaceful life," he said.
